AJM Choice and The Wheelchair Football Association Launch Three-Year Partnership to Enable the WFA Academy.
The Wheelchair Football Association (WFA) is delighted to announce a new three-year partnership with AJM Choice, who will support the delivery and development of the WFA Academy.
Guided by the philosophy “Learn. Lead. Achieve.”, the WFA Academy has been established to support the long-term development of players and leaders within Powerchair Football. The Academy provides a clear framework for education, mentoring and professional development alongside participation in the sport.
AJM Choice provides personalised mobility solutions across the UK, offering manual wheelchairs, powerchairs and mobility aids tailored to individual lifestyles and needs. Backed by the clinical expertise and experience of AJM Healthcare, , the UK's largest independent provider of NHS-backed mobility services, bringing the same level of trusted care, professionalism, and clinical expertise to those seeking private mobility options. AJM Choice helps individuals access high-quality mobility solutions that support independence, confidence and everyday living.
The partnership reflects a strong alignment between both organisations, which share a commitment to empowering wheelchair users, promoting independence and creating opportunities for people to lead active and fulfilling lives.
The first programme delivered through the Academy is the Sporting Excellence Programme (SEP), launched in January 2026. The SEP provides structured support for players through a three-year apprenticeship model that combines high-performance sport with education, mentoring and community engagement.
Participants undertake weekly learning modules while continuing to train and compete with their clubs, working towards a Level 3 qualification while completing a three-year paid apprenticeship. The programme is designed to support players not only as athletes, but also as leaders and role models within the Powerchair Football community.
The first cohort of the Sporting Excellence Programme have now begun their journey through the Academy while continuing to train and compete with their clubs across the country. Further cohorts are planned, alongside additional programmes in the future, as the WFA Academy develops into a key part of the sport’s long-term player and workforce pathway.
Future initiatives delivered through the WFA Academy are expected to include additional development pathways, including programmes focused on coaching and leadership within Powerchair Football.
Together, The WFA and AJM Choice will work to strengthen the development pathway within Powerchair Football, supporting players both on and off the court.
Adam McEvoy, Senior Development Manager at The Wheelchair Football Association, said:
“This partnership is about more than sport — it’s about opportunity.
The WFA and AJM Choice represent a shared commitment to supporting people who use wheelchairs to lead active, ambitious and fulfilling lives. Through The WFA Academy, we are strengthening our ability to support players to grow as athletes, leaders and role models. Together, we’re creating something that will have a lasting impact on individuals and the future of powerchair football.”
Dean Williams, Chairperson of The Wheelchair Football Association, said:
“Absolutely thrilled to partner with AJM Choice on the launch of The WFA Academy - enabling us to build high-quality educational and professional learning programmes for our community. From our very first meeting, the alignment, synergy and ambition were a perfect match - we share a common purpose: to enrich the lives of wheelchair users. I'm super excited for our organisations to work together and create excellence over the coming years.”
Jeremy Garman, Director of AJM Choice, said:
“We are delighted to partner with the WFA to support the development of individuals through the Academy starting with the Sporting Excellence apprenticeship programme. With such strong alignment in objectives and values we look forward to playing our part in spreading the knowledge of and access to the sport of Powerchair Football and the multiple benefits this brings to players, families and the community.”
